Top tips for taking cbd tincture under the tongue
Besides vaping, absorbing CBD tincture sublingually (under your tongue) is by far the most efficient way of getting CBD into your system. But for some people it can be challenging.
Here are my top 6 tips for taking CBD sublingually:
- Mix the oil well before getting your dose
- Use a mirror the first few times
- Breath through your nose
- Do something, don’t stand in front of a mirror the whole time
- Have a glass of juice, milk, or water available as soon as you swallow
- Don’t think about it, just get it done
For most people, it’s easy to take CBD oil sublingually. But for others, it can be tricky. And let’s be honest, unflavored CBD oil does great things for the body but it isn’t the tastiest thing in the world. So it helps to have a bit of a game plan until you get used to it.
Mix the oil before getting your dose
Mixing the oil vial before sucking up your dose in the dropper is a good practice. The oil can separate a little bit. If you don’t mix it before pulling up your dose then it’s possible you could get more or less CBD in each dosage. One of the keys to CBD is to try and get the same amount each time you take it. Rolling the vial before pulling each dosage will help with this.
Use a mirror the first few times
It won’t take long for you to get the hang of putting the oil under your tongue. But the first few times it will be smart to use a mirror. I found myself touching the bottom of my tongue the first time. Probably not a good idea since your tongue can get bacteria on the dropper and potentially contaminate your product.
Breath through your nose
I prefer the unflavored CBD tinctures. They don’t taste great, but I don’t like the aftertaste of stevia, which is what most flavored tinctures are sweetened with. The smell of CBD oil is kind of earthy/peanut buttery. I don’t even know if that’s a useful description for people. You’ll understand the first time you try it.
The good news is that when it’s under your tongue you don’t even taste it. You don’t have taste buds under your tongue. But if you breathe through your mouth, you’re going to get a strong whiff of it in the back of your mouth. It’s pretty strong and it can happen as long as you have the oil under your tongue.
By breathing through your nose, it makes it so you don’t ever get that strange peanut butter flavor. Something to keep in mind the first time you put a dose of oil under your tongue.
Keep yourself busy
Once you have the oil in your mouth, make yourself busy. Get dressed, do your hair, make the bed, do something. I find it more difficult to keep it in my mouth for 2 minutes when I stand in front of the mirror. But if I get busy doing something it’s not unusual for me to go for about 5 minutes before I swallow it.
Obviously the longer the product sits under your tongue, the more CBD you’re going to absorb. So stay busy once the CBD is under your tongue and get the most out of your CBD dollars.
Have a glass of something ready to drink
Remember the earthy/peanut buttery smell I mentioned above? Well when it’s time to swallow the oil, the same flavor coats your tongue and mouth. The good news is that it can be washed away immediately by drinking something right after you swallow the oil. Juice or milk will take the flavor away completely. Water is even pretty effective but you might have to drink more of it to do the trick. Just make sure you have it ready to drink as soon as you swallow the oil.
Don’t think about it
This may or may not be a problem for you, but don’t stand in front of the mirror thinking about putting this oil under your tongue for too long. It really isn’t a big deal. But I know some people tend to psych themselves out by overthinking things. Don’t let yourself do that with CBD oil. Just follow my tips above and once you’re in a routine you will hardly even think about it anymore.
Final thoughts…
If you’ve read much of my blog you know I highly recommend using CBD tinctures under your tongue for getting CBD into your system. Unflavored oil doesn’t taste great but it also doesn’t leave an overpowering flavor in your mouth either if you wash it down with a drink of some kind.
There may be a flavored CBD oil out there that tastes fine. But it’s been my experience that most of them are over flavored and linger in your mouth for quite a while. And even the flavored products have a bit of the earthy/peanut buttery flavor to them. It’s totally your call, but for me, I just prefer straight up unflavored CBD oil.
